The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to international commercial arbitration and distinguish this from domestic arbitration. By the end of the course participants will be able to understand how arbitration works, appreciate its various phases and will be able to ascertain how the various laws inherent in arbitral proceedings operate and interact. By the end of the course, participants will feel comfortable enough to represent clients in international arbitral proceedings and appreciate the role of the relevant domestic laws.

This course will attract lawyers with little, or no expertise in arbitration, non-lawyers who wish to get involved in arbitration as experts or arbitrators in specialist disputes (e.g. construction or tax experts), as well as students interested in studying this field. This course should also interest lawyers and non-lawyers in corporations or public entities where arbitration clauses are increasingly inserted in agreements with clients, contractors etc.

Ilias Bantekas is Professor of International Law and International Arbitration at Hamad bin Khalifa University, College of Law (collaboration between Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and Qatar Foundation) and an associate research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) of the University of London. He has held academic positions at Brunel, Harvard, Miami, Cleveland-State, Trier, Cagliari, SOAS and elsewhere. He acts as consultant to various inter-governmental organizations, such as UNDP, UN special procedures, Council of Europe and the EU. He also advises state entities, law firms and NGOs in most fields of international law, human rights, international development law and arbitration and is regularly appointed as arbitrator in international commercial disputes. He was a member of the Greek Debt Truth Committee and advises several debt-related organizations. Key books include: International Human Rights Law and Practice (3rd ed, Cambridge UP 2019, with L Oette); Introduction to International Arbitration (Cambridge UP 2015); Criminological Approaches to International Criminal Law (Cambridge UP 2014); International Law Concentrate (Oxford UP, 4th ed, 2019, with E Papastavridis); The International Criminal Court and Africa (Oxford UP 2017); International Criminal Law (4th ed, Hart, 2010); Commentary on the UN Disabilities Convention (Oxford UP 2018, with MA Stein and D Anastasiou); Sovereign Debt and Human Rights (Oxford UP, 2018, with C Lumina); Commentary to the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration (Cambridge UP, 2019, with P Ortolani et al).
